What you edit (preferred and/or will accept)

Specializing in Fiction such as Romance, Suspense/Thriller/Mystery, Paranormal, Fantasy, Western,Contemporary, Crime/Detective, Fable/Fairy tale, Horror, Humor, Legend, Magical Realism, Mythology/Mythopoeia, Realistic Fiction, Science fiction, Historical fiction, etc.

And Nonfiction such as Inspirational/Motivational, Self-help, Biography, Memoir, Narrative nonfiction/personal narrative

A short blurb about yourself/company/both:

As an author myself, I currently have five books published with more on the way. What that means to you is that I’m also a writer. I know and understand the time, hard work and sacrifice that goes into completing that novel. I’ve also experienced the embarrassment of publishing without the benefit of a quality proofreader, and that’s not the way to put your best foot forward or the way to build an audience. I want to help others avoid this mistake. For nearly ten years before becoming a freelance editor, I worked side by side with other writers in the capacity of beta reader, critique partner, and occasional editor, as well as cheering squad. Mentoring comes naturally to me and has become a passion.

I focus primarily on new writers, so book coaching and developmental/content editing are where I spend most of my time. But that doesn’t mean I leave your side after your first book has been completed. I also offer two levels of copy/line editing, as well as proofreading, and I encourage my clients to contact me whenever they need me.  Along with my prior writing/mentoring/editing experience, I spent more than twenty years as a paralegal composing and editing thousands of legal documents from correspondence to pleadings to appeal briefs, and everything in between.

Writing

What you edit (preferred and/or will accept)

Non-Fiction — memoir, theses & dissertations, technology, music/entertainment, and education

Fiction — young adult, fantasy, science fiction, paranormal, romance & erotica

A short blurb about yourself/company/both:

I’m an academic librarian with experience proofing academic theses and dissertations, writing and publishing academic articles, and researching the latest trends in library technology. My background is widely varied. From degrees in education, music theory, and library science to work experience in everything from hospital patient nutrition to logistics warehouses to preschool teaching. My insatiably curious nature gives me the unique ability to write and edit in numerous fields. I consider myself a “forever student.” I am continually taking courses to further develop myself as a professional editor of both fiction and non-fiction. I also take the occasional course that just sounds interesting. A data science course offered by IBM? Creative writing with Wesleyan University? Graphic design through California Institute of the Arts? You betcha! I have always had a passion for critiquing the written word. That combined with my education and life experience has led me to working as a freelance editor. I offer a variety of services to match the skills I’ve developed over my career: editing, proofing, reviewing, transcribing, researching, and writing.

Critique/Beta Read

What you edit (preferred and/or will accept)

Genres: Speculative fiction, including all science fiction, fantasy, steampunk (or any punk), urban, superhero, dystopian, suspense, thriller, crime, clean romance, Christian, fanfiction, and actionadventure.

Will Accept: Non-fiction

Genres I will not read: Anything with sexually explicit or graphic sex scenes; horror or paranormal. I am not familiar with them enough to be able to give you feedback on improving them.

A short blurb about yourself/company/both:

I’ve been writing for 13 years, primarily fantasy and science fiction, and through that, I’ve learned how to convey a story. In the past year, I started offering developmental editing and story coaching through my site because I want to help more authors get their works out there. We all have stories, and it is through those stories that we make an impact in the world. It’s through stories that lives are changed, and we forge a legacy. It doesn’t matter whether you write fantasy or self-help, the ability to tell a story remains the same. As a coach and developmental editor, I provide worksheets to help authors get their stories started, along with helpful tools that will help them hit their goals. Also, I help them define their target audience. While those are great, the part that has helped my clients the most is the one-on-video calls where we brainstorm, and the author can get instant feedback on their ideas. My goal is to help authors tell their stories because only they can tell it! I want to see their dreams come true!

All services include access to me via Facebook and email. I also offer one-on-one video call for writing help and discussion of your work, which must be scheduled in advance. The first (limited to one hour) is free, and any subsequent meetings are $25/hour.

What you edit (preferred and/or will accept)

I specialize in and prefer fantasy and science fiction, but I am open to all genres.

A short blurb about yourself/company/both:

Let me be a part of your journey. I get it. Sharing your work to have it critiqued or looked over for mistakes is scary. We all wish we could produce spotless pieces, but the universe isn’t so kind. Even a seasoned writer needs a fresh pair of eyes. So I am offering mine. I’ll even throw in an extra pair since I wear glasses. I have a degree in journalism, completed professional and creative writing courses, and took media classes. Odds are, whatever your platform, I can work with it. I specialize in fantasy and science-fiction stories, but don’t let that stop you from sending in works of different genres. I read and work with all kinds of writing and I’d love to take a look at yours! Or perhap s you have the foundation of your world, the bones of your characters, but you’ve hit a wall. You have a story itching to be told but don’t know how to move forward. Trust me, I’ve been there, and I want to help. I’ll ask you questions, offer ideas, help in any way I can to get your ideas off the ground. I named my service “Editing With Love” because I make corrections and point out mistakes out of love for the craft. I edit not only as an editor but as a fellow writer and potential reader/consumer. I don’t expect you to blindly accept my edits, and I wouldn’t want you to. Let me work with you.

I offer three different levels of edit; developmental editing, line editing or proofreading. My pricing reflects the amount of time and detail that goes into each level of editing.

What you edit (preferred and/or will accept)

I prefer to edit YA/adult fiction, although I will consider MG. All genres accepted in theory, although I specialize in spec fiction, sci-fi, fantasy and contemporary realism. I’m less familiar with mystery and horror. Romance would depend on the exact nature of the project; I’m happy working on LGBTQ romance or romance with a twist, but anything with an abusive dynamic wouldn’t be a good fit for me. I will happily work on nonfiction and memoir, although for nonfiction I’d need to check whether the subject is something I know enough about to feel confident editing it effectively (obviously wouldn’t apply so much if the client was just looking for a proofread).

A short blurb about yourself/company/both:

Are you looking for a fresh set of eyes for your writing? I have freelance editing experience, and I’m an avid reader across any and all genres. I’m also a writer myself, so I know how hard it can be to catch mistakes in our own work! I offer a range of services to suit the needs of your project and, while I’ve provided a pricing guideline on my website for the different types of edit I provide, I’m happy to work with you to determine exactly what it is you want to get out of the editing process. I currently work fulltime, so I keep my client list small to ensure I can deliver high quality work with a quick turnaround. I look forward to getting as excited about your manuscript as you are!

Developmental, line, and copy editing

What you edit (preferred and/or will accept)

-Fiction: literary fiction, sci-fi and fantasy, adventure, LGBTQ
-Nonfiction: memoir, specialties in psychology and social justice, but capable of working with most topics

A short blurb about yourself/company/both:

I have ten years of experience editing books for selfpublished authors, website content, and articles across many subjects and industries. Over time, I have crafted my love of words into a profession with training, practice, more training, and more practice. My training includes academic education in the humanities, professional certification from NYU’s Center for Publishing, and on-the-job training in content strategy. When working with fiction, I aim to immerse myself in the setting or world you’ve created and consider my edits from that perspective. With nonfiction and websites, I always consider your writing from your point of view as well as your readers’ experience. I think about what you want to say, how your words reflect who you are, what your audiences want to hear, and how they best receive information. My feedback always includes what works as well as what doesn’t, with specific suggestions for improvement.

Clients can also purchase individual services.

What you edit (preferred and/or will accept)

Though I accept any work except for crude writing, erotica, paranormal horror, and fan fiction, I prefer to edit the same genres that I most enjoy reading, intended for the Young Reader through Adult audiences, listed below. Any length work from a short story to a full-length novel will be considered. Adventure or Epic Fantasy. Dystopian Fiction and Science Fiction. Planetary or Robotics/Automation. Science Fiction

A short blurb about yourself/company/both:

My name is Lydia Deyes. I have loved to write ever since I was in third grade, and the thrill of writing has stayed with me as an enduring hobby ever since. From technical writing in school, to drafting training material at work, to publishing fiction novels, I have continued to develop my writing and editing skills more than I would have ever imagined. Now, I’m ready to share my skills with the world and offer editing services to those who are less experienced or just want another eye! After all, even the best writers need someone else to show them where their work could use improvement. I strive to provide the highest quality editing services at a reasonable cost, while interacting with my clients and engaging with them on their manuscript. I hope that the editing process is a meaningful, positive experience for everyone involved, and that we both come out having learned a little bit more about what it means to be a great writer.

A short blurb about yourself/company/both:

I love everything about books; the smell, the feel, the sound when I turn a page and of course, the feeling of being captured, taken away to places unknown, and wanting to live there forever. In 2011, I was given my first Kindle. My family would joke that I couldn’t put my Kindle down. Which, if I’m being honest, was true back then. Well…that’s incorrect because they still joke about me not being able to put it down. My only issue was finding new novels and authors. Thank heavens for eBooks! In many ways, Literary Works began the moment I blazed through my first 20 books. When I would come across inconsistencies, improper word choices, or spelling errors, they made me stumble. It distracted me from the stories I dearly loved. Naturally, I became interested in helping authors by becoming a beta reader, which turned into proofreading, copy editing and finally venturing out into the field of developing memes and other avenues to help authors launch and promote their books. My interests besides reading includes coffee, consuming chocolate, anything to do with my grandbabies and connecting with the world of literature online.

During my editing process, I maintain a steady focus for voice, style, “flow”, and consistency in your writing, while ensuring that it is completely free of errors. I often aim to eliminate wordiness in order to ensure every word “packs the most punch” possible; develop ideas, concepts, characters, and storyline; organize ideas, sentences and paragraphs to create a captivating “flow”; and help your voice and style truly stand out to your readers. Creative Process Coaching specific for fictional character development through personal development.

A short blurb about yourself/company/both:

All of my works, whether as an editor, creative process coach, or in my mystical science fiction stories, involve listening and following the Path with Heart. Listening to the divine rhythms weaving throughout the web of the multiverse. Then following the magic existing in the subtlest of places, the messiest of shadows, and the light of our love. Where our bodies become the eternal bridge between the Cosmos and Earth – the living dream connecting us all. The most poignant thing I’ve learned over my 15+ years of engaging with the creative process is to Trust the Process. Everything has it’s own timing. Divine timing, if you are a believer. And sometimes, we need to take a step back to breathe, relax, and receive the next best steps. I can help you to clearly define those next best steps toward empowering your creative process. I work with you to unlock subconscious fears keeping you from fully accessing your creative process. By guiding you to see what’s deep down inside causing the block. We do this through somatic guided journeys and dialoguing with this “stuckness” to then transforming it through writing exercises. You will be amazed at what the “stuckness” is connected to in your life. You will be relieved at your profound ability to shift your perspective toward taking the next best steps. No matter what level of your writing we are working on together, we are consistently working toward enhancing your relationship with your creative process. Your success is my success.
